Do You Need a Leaf Guard system?We Answer the Most Common Questions For You
What are leaf guards?
Leaf guards are perforated covers installed on your existing eavestrough, or as part of your new eavestrough. The holes are carefully sized to allow water to enter your eavestrough and to keep everything else out.
We are proud to install the Alu-Rex Gutter Clean System® on existing eavestroughs and the Alu-Rex Continuous Hanger™ system on new eavestrough. They prevent birds from nesting in your eavestrough, wasp and hornet nests and eliminate breeding areas for mosquitos. They keep out leaves and debris and ensure that water is carried away from your roof and home as your system was designed to do.
Alu-Rex builds aluminum products of exceptional quality and, as a result, your Gutter Clean System® comes with a 40-year warranty on product performance and finish. Imagine reduced maintenance, increased safety and great looks that last and last. Talk to one of our trained estimators today.
Will these products handle heavy downpours of rain? It looks like there aren't enough holes and they’re too small.
Alu-Rex has carefully designed the Alu-Perf leaf guards to handle even the heaviest downpour. There are 489 holes every 19 inches (48 cm) and the holes are 2.8 mm (7/64″) in diameter. The heaviest rainfall recorded worldwide was 12″ (305 mm) of water in one hour in Holt, MO in 1947. By contrast, the 1996 Saguenay Flood in Quebec was triggered by 11″ (275 mm) of rain over three days. Alu-Rex leaf guards are build to handle over 32.9″ (836 mm) of water per hour.
That’s almost three times the heaviest rainfall ever recorded!
If your eavestrough overflows it is likely that you have:
- a blockage somewhere in your system;
- a general reduction in flow due to accumulated debris;
- eavestrough that is too narrow; or
- not enough downspouts.
Our estimator will help you determine the best course of action to get your system working again.
My house is surrounded by pine trees. Will this product handle lots of pine needles?
While the T-Rex® Continuous Hanger™ System and Gutter Clean System® will work pretty well for leaves and light pine needle problems, you must make sure to get the DoublePro® Microfiltration Continuous Hanger™ if you are surrounded by conifers. Its dual-layer membrane will block the way to fine debris like pine needles.
My house doesn't have any trees around it. Why should I use a Continuous Hanger™ system or the Gutter Clean System®?
The main advantages of new eavestrough is the strength, durability and quality. Our eavestrough systems will protect your home and look great for decades. New trees may grow and your home will still be protected. Of course, new trees or not, you’ll be protecting your eavestrough from ice and snow, wasps, hornets, birds and other animals that see an open eavestrough as an invitation to nest.
Will this product eliminate wasp, hornet, and bird nests? I'm tired of dealing with these every year.
Yes. Your eavestrough is likely the number one breeding ground for mosquitos on your property, a Continuous Hanger™ System or the Gutter Clean System® will eliminate it by keeping debris from trapping water in your eavestrough. You can read more about this, including findings by the Ontario Ministry of Health, on our Leaf Guard page.
How much maintenance is involved with a Continuous Hanger™ system or the Gutter Clean System®?
None. Once installed, you can forget about it and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from not having to climb up a ladder to clean your eavestrough. Your eavestrough will not only channel water away from your roofline and foundation, helping you avoid basement leaks, but it will allow the roof to dry properly and avoid the mould that often grows on the fascia.
How does your product perform in the winter with ice dams and snow?
The chance of ice dams forming will be greatly reduced as your eavestrough will perform as intended, once leaf guards are installed. The problem with most eavestrough is that ice builds up inside, so when snow on the roof melts there is nowhere for it to go and it gets trapped and forms more ice.
With a Continuous Hanger™ system or the Gutter Clean System®, ice and snow will accumulate on top of the leaf guard and when it gets warm enough to melt, the run-off will be able to get away from the roof and to the downspouts.
Additionally, by preventing ice and snow from building up in the eavestrough, you reduce the load on the brackets and extend the life of the system.
If you currently have ice build-up at the edge of your roofline we recommend that you check if the attic space is adequately ventilated and insulated.
Do wet leaves stick to Alu-Rex products?
Only temporarily. Wet leaves will dry quickly in the sun and blow away. Because they are on a perforated surface they will dry even faster than they would on the hood of your car, for instance. A little wind is all it takes to blow away dry leaves and debris.
A 10 km/hr wind effectively removes wet leaves and about 100 pine needles per linear foot.
Even if there are wet leaves on your leaf guard, the good news is that they remain permeable. Water will still get in between and through the leaves to drain away. The exclusive design of Alu-Rex products features an approximately 0.4″ (1 cm) basin which was shown in lab tests to be the correct depth to catch more water without stopping the wind from doing its job of sweeping away leaves, pine needles, and debris from the surface.
I saw plastic mesh leaf guard for sale at the store. Won't that work just as well?
No. While it may be tempting to believe that a simple plastic mesh can do the job, the opening in these products are much too large. Debris and animals can still get inside which will lead to all the problems unprotected eavestrough already has, including mosquitos and climbing a ladder to clean them out. Moreover, these products are not rigid so they will bend under the weight of ice and snow. There is just no comparison.
Do I have to get leaf guards?
We always recommend that you guard your eavestrough.
